A Mother of Three from Sumy Region: How Cash Assistance Supports a Family in a Front-Line Community
Oksana is a resident of Bilopilska community in Sumy Oblast and a mother of three children. Her youngest daughter Olha is only six months old, her older son is 11, and her middle daughter is 4. The woman is currently on parental leave, so any support for the family is critically important.
Displacement is not a new experience for Oksana. She had already changed her place of residence within the region before, when the security situation deteriorated. Eventually, the family ended up in Bilopilska community, where they remain today.
Oksana learned about the opportunity to receive cash assistance by chance — she came across the information online. She admits she was not specifically looking for it, but was very glad when she found out about the opportunity. Registration was her first such experience — she travelled to Kuyanivka for in-person registration.
The payments have now been received. Oksana says she will spend the funds first and foremost on essentials: nutritious and wholesome food for the children, and medicine that is needed right now. Part of the assistance will go towards paying for housing and utility bills.
In times of uncertainty, even basic financial support helps families better cope with everyday challenges and provide their children with what they need. The project is implemented by NGO Responsible Citizens in partnership with JERU — Joint Emergency Response in Ukraine — a joint initiative of Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide, with the financial support of the German Federal Foreign Office.
