Evacuation, Care, New Beginnings: A Donetsk Family Builds a Future with NGO Support
The Stoychan family established a family-type children’s home, where 10 children are currently being raised.
This is a story of loss, evacuations, the search for safety, and immense resilience. Despite the war, the family continues to create a space of care and support.
In the spring of 2025, they became participants in the program “Local, Inclusive, and Comprehensive Emergency Assistance to the Population Affected by the War in Ukraine,” implemented by the NGO “Responsible Citizens” in partnership with Mercy Corps and with financial support from the UK Government.
When shelling reached Dobropillya in 2022, the family evacuated to Portugal but returned to Ukraine due to difficulties adapting. The situation remained dangerous, and the family once again sought a way out.
During this period, they learned about the program and received financial assistance for each household member. This support was pivotal—it enabled them to evacuate again, secure medical treatment, cover basic needs, and regain a sense of stability.
Today, the family is reunited and focused on what matters most—ensuring the safety and development of their children.
