More Than 9,000 Children and Adults Received Support Through a UNICEF Ukraine Project in Communities Across Eastern Ukraine
In communities that continue to live with the daily realities of war, timely and accessible support remains critically important for children and families. During the first four months of implementation of UNICEF’s project, “Protection Services for the Most Vulnerable Children and Parents (or Their Caregivers) in Communities of Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts,” thousands of families have already received essential assistance.
The project is being implemented by Responsible Citizens NGO with financial support from UNICEF and the Government of the United States.
From February to May 2026, 6,424 children, adolescents and caregivers received Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services. Support was provided through Child-Friendly Spaces and mobile teams and included psychological counselling, group activities, recreational sessions and referrals to specialised services.
An additional 906 children received individual case management support. Specialists helped identify needs, coordinated access to essential services and accompanied families throughout the support process.
Another key component of the project focused on the prevention of and response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Through these activities, 2,631 people were reached. The interventions included awareness-raising activities, information sessions, safe identification of risks and individual support for survivors.
The project currently operates nine Child-Friendly Spaces and 12 mobile teams, ensuring access to services in communities across Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, including for families who are unable to regularly visit fixed service locations.
The interim results demonstrate that even amid ongoing humanitarian challenges, children and their caregivers can continue to access timely and essential support, while communities strengthen their capacity to protect children and families.
