“This Is Where We Find Strength Even When Things Are Hard” — the Story of Nazar’s* Family
Nazar* is an active and curious boy. The war changed his familiar world: the stress he experienced, distance learning, and the absence of live communication gradually made him more withdrawn and complicated his ability to adapt.
A Child-Friendly Space in Kharkiv Oblast became the safe place where Nazar* could be himself again. Here he received what he needed most — interaction with peers, support from adults, and a sense of belonging. Over time, the boy became an active participant in activities, made friends, and eagerly shares his impressions with his mother after every visit. In addition, Nazar* has begun speech therapy sessions, which are already showing noticeable results.
According to Nazar’s* mother, Vasylisa*, in a short period of time the specialists managed to accomplish a great deal — things that previously could only be dreamed of. The changes have helped Nazar* feel more confident and have laid the foundation for his further development.
Vasylisa* is a creative and strong woman. Despite difficult financial circumstances and being forced to rent housing, she finds support in creativity — embroidery. At the same time, consultations with mobile team specialists have become an important source of social and emotional support for her. They help her restore her inner resources, recognize her own capabilities, and cope more confidently with the challenges of everyday life.
Cash assistance also played an important role for the family. It made it possible to buy new clothes for Nazar* — a necessity for a child who is growing fast and steps out into the world every day.
“The help we received is, above all, about humanity. The atmosphere created by the mobile team and Space specialists is so warm that it doesn’t feel like a project or a class. It’s more like visiting family, where you are always welcome. This is an enormous source of support — for my child and for me. This is where I find strength, even in moments when things are very hard,” shares Vasylisa*.
This story illustrates how comprehensive humanitarian assistance — combining psychosocial support, child development, and cash assistance — creates the conditions for real and lasting change in the lives of families affected by war.
The project is implemented in Kharkiv Oblast by the NGO Responsible Citizens in partnership with Save the Children in Ukraine, with the generous support of the American people provided by the United States Government.
