More than 10,000 residents of the Sumy region received aid
More than 10,000 people from the Sumy region received humanitarian, financial, and psychosocial support as part of the project “Support for Vulnerable Households and Communities Affected by Conflict to Meet Basic Needs in the Sumy Region.”
The project was implemented by Responsible Citizens NGO in partnership with the Joint Emergency Response in Ukraine (JERU) consortium of non-profit organizations — a joint initiative of Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide — with financial support from the German Federal Foreign Office.
The project ran from August 2025 to June 2026 and was designed to support residents of frontline communities in the Sumy region who had been affected by the war. During this period, assistance was provided to 10,108 people — 14.6% more than originally planned.
During the project:
- 4,888 people were registered to receive multipurpose cash assistance;
- 773 households received support to prepare for the winter season;
- 2,594 people participated in group psychosocial support activities;
- 707 individual psychological consultations were provided;
- 911 residents took part in information sessions on mental health and psychosocial support.
An important component of the project was the integration of different forms of assistance, says Oksana Ivatina, Project Manager at Responsible Citizens NGO:
“One of the most valuable outcomes was the integration of different types of support. Thanks to the established referral mechanism that connected participants in psychosocial support activities with cash assistance programmes, 103 families facing difficult life circumstances were able to receive additional financial support exactly when they needed it most.”
The project results once again confirmed that effective humanitarian assistance must be comprehensive. Combining financial assistance with psychosocial services not only helps meet people’s immediate needs but also strengthens community resilience, fosters trust, and creates the conditions for further recovery.
