12 km from the frontline: Support for those who need it most
In the frontline communities of Donetsk region, the team of Responsible Citizens NGO is registering residents for multi-purpose cash assistance. This initiative is part of the project “Local, inclusive, and multisectoral emergency aid for war-affected people in Ukraine”, implemented in partnership with Mercy Corps and financially supported by the UK government.
The aid has already reached residents of the Mykolaiv and Dobropillia communities. Registration is now underway in Kryvorizka and Lyman communities.
“We work where there’s no longer connection, electricity, or running water. People live in damaged homes or shelters. They have very limited access to medicine, healthcare, and food — all delivered sporadically by humanitarian actors. But we come to them. And for many, this is their first chance to receive financial support,” — says project manager Kyrylo Maslakhov.
Why cash assistance?
In wartime, this is the most practical and dignified form of aid. Every family has unique needs — from medications to food or children’s clothing. Cash empowers people to prioritize on their own terms, preserving dignity and control.
“We usually register people who’ve lost their home, income, or access to care. For many, this is life-saving first aid,” — shares a member of the registration team.
The amount of the cash transfer is 10,800 UAH per person. Priority is given to vulnerable groups: large families, people with disabilities, single parents, older persons, and others in need.
“Every day brings challenges, but our goal is to deliver dignity and hope. Behind each registration — a human story,” — the team emphasizes.

How support helps Yulia and her children start a new lifeYulia and her four children were evacuated from the occupied city of Dniprorudne. The forced relocation changed everything— a new city, no job, and an uncertain future. "I mostly try to manage on my own," Yulia shares. She cannot leave her youngest child unattended, and kindergartens are not operating, making it impossible to return to work for now.
