Educational initiatives for displaced persons: Nataliia’s story from Donetsk region
The NGO “Responsible Citizens” supports internally displaced persons in finding themselves, acquiring new skills, and adapting to life in new circumstances.
Nataliia Ukrainets, a displaced person from Donetsk Region, arrived in Dymer, Kyiv Region, seeking a fresh start. The change of environment, new challenges, and the need to adapt raised difficult questions: how to find one’s place in a new reality? The answer came through educational projects by the NGO “Responsible Citizens,” which became a true catalyst for change for Nataliia.
“We’re all under stress, but just sitting idle isn’t an option,” Nataliia recalls. Upon learning about the opportunity to undergo free training supported by the NGO “Responsible Citizens” and international partners, such as the American Mercy Corps and the UK government, she decided to give it a try. Nataliia chose a course on Nordic walking, which not only introduced her to a new profession but also helped restore her psychological well-being.
Today, Nataliia is a Nordic walking instructor. She conducts individual sessions, inspiring other displaced persons and local residents to care for their physical and mental health. “It’s not just a new skill. It’s new connections, extra income, and a chance to help others,” she shares. Her story is a testament to how education can be a key to self-reliance and integration into a new community.
According to Olga Kosse, Head of the NGO “Responsible Citizens,” such projects have a profound impact: “Education helps people adapt, earn a living, and become independent from humanitarian aid.” Through collaboration with international partners, the organization has implemented programs that have given hundreds of displaced persons a chance at a new life.
Enrique Menendez, Director of Projects and Programs at the NGO, adds: “Education is an investment in Ukraine’s recovery. It helps people not only endure but also build a future.” Nataliia is one of those who seized this opportunity, and her journey inspires others.
Nataliia’s story is just one of many. The educational initiatives of the NGO “Responsible Citizens” continue to open doors for displaced persons, helping them find themselves and strengthen the communities they live in.
